first 30 posts of the holiday homework

1) If you could ban something what would it be and why?

a. If I had the power and resources to ban anything that I wanted to I would ban the use of fossil for transportation. Misuse of fossil fuels is among the leading causes for global warming, which can potentially end the world as we know it. Hence it is only practical that we control the use and pollution caused from fossil fuels through a ban of its use in transportation. If we control the misuse of fossil fuels in our daily life then we can leave some of this scarce resource for future generations to come and increase the life of the planet earth by a sizeable factor. Numerous brands of hybrid or fully electrically operated cars and bikes are already available in the market .Some countries such as Holland has already began a transition to; these will make the shift from a petroleum based system to a fully electrical one much simpler and faster. In fact many countries such as Holland have already made large progress in this transition; all of Holland’s public transportation is fully electric including their trams and busses. Holland has also began to put car charging plugs which are free of cost at regular intervals in the city further minimizing costs for the people. All developed countries should take example from Holland and begin a similar transition. Now that Holland is almost a fully electrically run country, not only will they be one of the last victims of global warming and the destruction of earth but they will also be able to breath clean air, free from all the black smoke spurted by all passing vehicles. All the people in our world deserve to be happy and to live in a pollution free environment that is why if I could ban anything in the world it would be the use of fossil fuels in transportation.

2) "Human rights" is a term frequently used but seldom defined. What rights should belong to every human being? Discuss.

a. Human rights, as described by dictionary.com is fundamental rights, especially those believed to belong to an individual and in whose exercise a government may not interfere, as the rights to speak, associate, work, etc. I disagree with this definition of human rights, because according to this definition a large section of the global population is excluded from human rights. In countries like China and Burma free speech is ban, you must also note that china has the greatest percentage of the global population. Then dictionary definition also excludes a large population of India due to the Indian caste system. The right to associate is again limited to the Dalit’s or the lowest caste of India, in some rural parts of India the Dalit’s can’t even speak to any of the upper classes. Then comes the third factor which is the right to work without government intervention. But this too is limited to the millions of thief’s, drug leaders, and those on the other side of the law who consider illegal activities their work. These activities are considered illegal or harmful to society so the government does intervene; this defies the third concept of the dictionary definition of Human Rights. I believe that human rights should be simple, simple to the core of our existence. Every Human has the right to live and so the first and most simple human right should be the right live. So committing murder or even having a war with another country should be considered an act of defying human rights. Then the second and last should be that every human has the right to food, water, and shelter. After all it is a world that we share so it is our responsibility to make sure that its resources are distributed accordingly. When people debate about human rights they should keep their arguments simple, the single human right is simple, the right to live and all other clauses of this statement are only to add more amenities to this single factor.

3) Why do you want to go to Ohio state university?

a. Ever since I was a middle school, being a realist, and unlike my other friends I never aimed towards going to fancy and overpriced Ivey league collages but because of contemporary media and other reasons, I always thought of the perfect collage as a party collage. But then I got into the 10th grade and realized just how hard life can get in the future so then and there I realized not to play around with my life and get to work. I still didn’t want to go to a collage like Harvard or Yale, I wanted to go a big collage with its own American football team, a collage which is not only study oriented but also encourages students to pursue outdoor activities. So in the 11th grade while doing my collage research, and keeping my criteria’s in mind I came across the Ohio State University. It was perfect. Ohio state university offered everything that I wanted and even more, I even got the opportunity to receive an excellent education, comparable to Ivey league level schools. So with Ohio State university , not only do I have the opportunity to get a high quality education but also have fond memories about collage that will last a lifetime, memories outside a room filled with books. I want to have memories of going to college football games with friends or even a weekend camp out. Collage is probably the last opportunity to be free and have fun in life; afterwards it’s all work and no play. Besides attending the tenth best business school in America, I want to join the Ohio State University because I want to enjoy my years in collage and not regret missing out the opportunity to study as well as do other things in collage.

4) Write your own essay question and answer it…

If aliens begin an invasion of earth, what would you do?

a. When aliens from outer space come in their unidentified flying objects to invade planet earth for its rich and abundant resources, a situation that I think is highly probable I would not bother to run or hide, rather I would join forces with them and help them invade our planet earth. Most will call me a betrayer but some will call me smart. Many may call me weird but after giving this topic extensive thought, I joining the aliens am the only way out of this mess, unless humans figure out how to live on the moon or make a refugee camp on the earth’s crust. Assuming that aliens have cool laser guns and other futuristic weapons, they will defeat our armies for sure so there is no point staying with the humans for sure as fighting will only result in death. I don’t want to die like other normal people so as to avoid death; I am willing to betray the humans. I would even suggest the same to my friends and family but coming from a republican background, I doubt my family will listen. You may be thinking that I am a very selfish person, and I am I don’t deny the fact. Honestly I don’t really care that much when people I don’t know die, and before you judge me I’m sure you dint either Almost every day you hear on the news that 25 people died in some terrorist attack or the other, you don’t mourn the dead, you don’t even pay attention to the details of the news item. Humans are selfish and I am no exception. If aliens were to attack earth and if I they gave me an opportunity to help them and live I would surely accept it and then after the war is over live a superior life to my fellow slave humans. So to those reading this I advise you to join me join the aliens and live.

5) Tell us about the neighborhood that you grew up in and how it helped shape you into the kind of person you are today. (Yale and the University of Chicago).

i. I grew up in a small and quiet neighbourhood in Nepal. In our block I think that I neither was the only kid so in my neighborhood nor was their much noise from balls breaking windows and neither did I have any friends there. Though our neighbourhood was small we enjoyed our privileges. A big shot Politian use to live in our neighborhood so when power cuts started happening in Nepal, we had electricity 24-7. Plus my area is quite close to the police headquarters so no Maoists ever come near to cause any havoc of any kind. I always lived in the safe, quite, and peaceful neighbourhood of mine unlike the rest of Nepal. It was as if where I lived was in the center of Kathmandu yet completely secluded from the country. My neighbourhood helped shape my life in many ways. I think one of the main ways in which it helped shape my personality is I can never get bored when am by me. Because most of friends lived quite far away, on weekday after school evenings I was alone. My loneliness helped me expand my horizons into attempting to climb trees, and other recreational activities. Today when I’m alone in dorm room, at home or anywhere else I feel I can always find a way to entertain myself. Living in a quiet neighbourhood has helped me develop a great span of patience, and hence it has greatly influenced me and my personality. Where we live and grow up is a major factor that shapes a person’s personality. All people should be careful of the place they choose to live in and the conditions they choose to live in as it could greatly influence the future of their children and the personality and lifestyle of the children.

6) You’ve just written a 300-page autobiography. Send us page 217. (University of Pennsylvania)

i. High school had finally arrived, something I had waited for a long time. Though I was once again at the bottom the social hierarchy in schools, I greatly cherished having power over the middle scholars, sometimes bullying them to my bidding. Though I regret it now, it was fun back in the day. I finally had the privileges of keeping tuck in my room and being able to visit the bazzar every day. I greatly looked forward to the semester. I was told to expect a sudden bump in the amount of work assigned but I was ready to take it head on. As I arrived at the school gates I was instructed that my batch got a small wooden cabin of a dorm on the top of a cold hill rather than the newly built Hostel with five star facilities. That was a bit of a disappointment at first but later on I learned it was rather a blessing. Though old and crappy, with limited hot water, cockroaches, rats and the rest of the zoo, all in all it was a fantastic experience. Our class that was broken up into small groups and gangs, was greatly unified as all had to huddle together in small rooms to keep warm on snowy nights. Rokeby, as our dorm was called led us to become the most powerful and remembered class in the history of Woodstock School. My experiences as a high schooler was amazing, one that I will never ever forget. I still remember experimenting with liquids bad for my health on Rokeby field; I still remember fighting over a TV remote with fort other guys. I still remember all the golden memories that I made in Rokeby. That year was truly the best year of my life.

7) If we could only admit one more student to the University of Pittsburgh, why should it be you? (University of Pittsburgh/94).

a. If you could admit only one more student into the university of Pittsburgh it should be me because it is not you who is doing me a favour, rather it’s me doing me you a favor by applying to you university. I have a perfect GPA, a 2340 SAT score, I am an Olympic gold medalist. Everything about me is perfect, except this essay. I know am pompous, self-obsessed etc. etc. but the point is that I am one of the best candidates in the world and it would be a privilege for you to have me at your university. Your university should try to entice me to come to your school by offering 100 percent scholarship because I am among the best in the world, in the future I have the potential to be among great names such as Einstein, Heisenberg and other great scientists and to have come from you university, would be one of the greatest achievements that your university has ever accomplished.

b. Now on a more humble note, you should admit me because I am practical. I can afford to attend your university; I don’t need a scholarship although it would be nice. I have potential that, according to past admissions is something that your school values highly. I am willing to participate in the many extracurricular activities that your school has to offer. I am willing to do all that it takes to represent the school in the best possible manner, even mention the school in my gold medal speech. I hope that you select me as one of your many excellent new students despite my haughty and arrogant attitude. I would like to attend your university the following year 2014. Please choose me.

8) Describe a risk that you have taken and discuss its impact on your life.

a. The greatest risk that I have taken in my life is when I attempted to jump from one tree to another. Though it sounds innocent, stupid and maybe even a little animal like it is something that I regret every single day of my life. A simple and innocent action has made incapacitated me for the rest of my life. I lost my legs. I broke them, every one told me I was going to be ok and the next the next thing I know is the doctors say it’s complicated and am sitting in a wheel chair for the rest of my life. I think the risks impact on my life is quite obvious. It takes me a half hour to change my pants every morning, if there is no one to help me I can’t use the bathroom alone so I sometimes end up wetting myself on a wheel char. You may laugh but it really isn’t that funny when you are the person sitting on the wheelchair. My life has become miserable, no girl will ever date me, and I can’t have kids or intercourse for that matter. When taking the SAT, I got lower points simply because I had to write on my lap because the desk was simply too tall. Making that simple jump from one tree to another was the biggest risk I ever took and it is the one that impacted me the most. If you are sitting there thinking this guy is a depressing person and there are many disabled people, well you are wrong I am just plain unlucky. On an additional note all that handy-capable crap is not true. Just some old people telling others that they are happier that they actually are. I hope you accept me in your collage, or it’s just another miserable speed bump in my endless life.

9) Evaluate a significant experience or achievement that has special meaning to you. (Harvard)

a. A significant experience that had special meaning to was becoming the head of coffee bar. Coffee bar is a little charitable cafĂ© organized by the dorm council in my school. This is the only part of school that I enjoyed. Counting the profits after the sale, getting the delivery all the aspects of running the restaurant had always fascinated me, not to forget the free food. I always thought that classes were endless; life was slow, and redundant. Coffee Bar was a life saver for me as it helped not only approach a lifelong dream but also gave me an opportunity to make new contacts around the town of Mussoorie. It was like rejuvenation to me, and becoming the head an absolute honor. Coffee bar gives me a break, a break from school, grades, pressure, parents and other factors that inflict students every day. I got the opportunity to break away from this pressure, I am one of the lucky ones to find a safe way to break away from this pressure, and others take up smoking and drinking alcohol. I got the opportunity to become the head, to control the thing I had the most interest. I felt like I had just got the opportunity to re-control my life. What be more special than regaining control of the thing that gives someone optimum pleasure. Is this addiction, I don’t know? Am in denial. I suppose that this is sufficient for evaluating a significant experience and how it has impacted me. I don’t think this essay is adequate to get me into Harvard. I really don’t care as long as I achieve my lifelong dream of owning and operating restaurants.

10) What are the responsibilities of an educated person?

a. There should be no particular responsibilities of an educated person; rather the question should be what the responsibilities of any person are. I think that If any person follows the ten commandments form the bible can live a happy life, just kidding!, I think the only responsibility that anyone has is to simply aspire to make the world a better place. In their own unique and different way. All other responsibilities that anyone has should at the end all point towards to the final goal of making the world a better place. To make the world a better place is the responsibilities of all people who reside on earth. Weather person thinks that voting will make the world a better place, or whether a person thinks blowing themselves up and killing hundreds of others will make the world a better place so be it. It is their responsibility to do those actions with their full integrity and willingness. So again the question is not what are the responsibilities of an educated person rather it is, what is the responsibilities of any human person. To plant trees, to give to charity, to join the army, to take care of parents are all commonly known responsibilities of educated people. These all help to make the world a better place and help improve the quality of life for all others. Speaking of responsibilities, educated people simply have an advantage of a better sense of judgment when completing these responsibilities. To complete and fulfill our ultimate responsibility towards others, education only helps. So education only helps to complete this responsibility. Some approach this goal with education like Jesus and others do it without like the guy who owns the soup kitchen down the road. The purpose of our existence is to make the world a better place.

11) Ask and answer the one important question which you wish we had asked

a. The one question that I hoped that you asked was, “why do you ask so many questions?” why is the world full of so many questions. Why does the world have to full of these questions these tests these quizzes where there is a right and wrong answer. Why is the world so complicated, it is based on who answers questions more accurately. Those who can answer question more accurately are more successful and those who are worse at answering questions are less successful in life. If there were no questions we would be equal, we would be perfect. If eve never questioned the will of god we would be living in a lush garden full of animals and trees. We would be living in a perfect world. Questions are the real reason our world is so advance and yet so f**ked up. Why ask questions when you can get by without them, why introduce the unnecessary complication when there is no need for it. Why do humans ask questions, is it in our nature? Am asking questions while writing about not asking questions. It is the very reason we are who we are, our ability to question and answer questions. It is why we are different from the other barbaric animals. It is why we are so much more advance, it is why we live in sky scrapers and they live in jungles. It is also the reason why we control their lives and they not ours. It is because of the human ability to ask questions that we are at the top of the food chain; no one can screw with us, because we can shoot them. Our ability to question sets us apart from all the others.

12) If you had a day to spend as you wish, how would you use your time?

a. If I had a day to spend as I wished, like most of my other vacation days. I picture my ideal day like this. I’m sitting on out lazy boy couch, slouching in front of a 55 inch television. Sixty hours’ worth of recorded television. My favorite programs of course, Boston legal, the big-bang theory, how I met your mother, chuck, two and a half men, the Simpsons, family guy, it’s always sunny in Philadelphia etc. yup I love to watch TV shows, I’m bit of a TV show junkie actually. I would find my nirvana in ordering two large pizzas and a two litter bottle of coca cola from my favourite Italian restraint in the world, “fire n’ ice” I would eat pizza drink coke and watch TV the whole day. The ideal day for many teen agers like me. If you are reading this essay and thinking about how much this kid is missing out on life I want to tell you that you are missing out on life. I have access to the world from my TV. Knowledge from its shows. I have access to the best food and drink, and I don’t even have to get up from the most comfortable seat in the world. You are missing out on life. On this ideal day, I would probably argue about showering or not the whole day but probably end up not doing it. I would also consider doing some work but rely on my talent for procrastination. On my ideal day, I have no worries which are extremely rare. I would have responsibilities. Just my couch and my TV. This is my ideal day, if you have not ever experienced such a day. You must try it.

13) Tell us about yourself.

a. I am neither cat nor dog, am turtle

b. I’m windows not mac

c. I’m coffee not tea

d. I’m man not woman

e. I’m a gamer not a worker

f. I’m better not worse

g. I’m optimistic nor pessimistic

h. I’m city not suburb

i. I’m big not small

j. I’m lazy not active

k. I’m a procrastinator, not timely

l. I’m medical not herbal

m. I’m automatic not manual

n. I’m human not robot

o. I’m house not apartment

p. I’m candy not cracker

q. I’m glasses not 20-20

r. I’m soccer not cricket

s. I’m me and not anyone else

t. I’m a little copycat and a little original

u. And concerning you collage, hopefully:

v. I’m in not out

14) Write about something that is important to you. (Hope College)

a. Something very important to me is video games; something others say is shallow, a waste of time, and maybe addictive but I think that being a gamer is a privilege. I can explore other world; do things that are impossible in reality, kill people at my disposal. I am one of those people who keep track of games as they release and buy them as soon as they come out; I love video games because they can entertain me when there is no one else or nothing else to entertain me. A game like call of duty, in their multiplayer mode gives me the opportunity to virtually kill my friends as many times as I want. In games like Grand Theft Auto I can go to a cop shoot him in the head and watch the blood spurt out like a fountain. Violent I know, I get to explore my capacity for violence to its ultimate potential. From blowing up innocent villagers in just cause 2 to killing bloody zombies in the house of the dead, I can spend long hours of the day glaring at the television or laptop screen, spending time in a different world, or many different worlds for that matter. I can be batman, superman or any other man. I can fly, jump, shoot laser from my eyes, beat Nadal on a clay court or stand in the Spanish football line up. Video games allow us to achieve what we can’t, they allow us to do whatever we want when-ever we want and how ever we want. It’s truly an innovation a revolution. A new active form of entertainment.

15) What is your favorite question and why?

a. My favourite question is what does you like to eat, because it usually involves food being served to me in the next half an hour. I am a big food, I enjoy eating a wide variety of food from sushi, to roast chicken, to pizza, and to momo the list is endless. My favorite parts of the day are the meal time. If I appreciate good cheese, parmesan, Gouda, Nepal yak cheese, Swiss gruyere, I love it. When someone asks me what I like to eat, it always takes me a long time to answer because I start to think of all the amazing dishes in the world, all the different tastes, all the different textures and the smells. For me, I live to eat not eat to live. Food is an integral part of my personality. My mom should consider herself lucky because she can cook extremely well, otherwise we would have a serious problem every day. I like to eat new things, I like to experiment with flavours, and I am always willing to try something new, even snake and cockroach. So when someone asks me what I want to eat, I really appreciate the question as it shows concern and regard for the person. For me, respect for that person goes up immediately. What a person likes to eat is a personal question, one that is extremely important to me and it is also my favorite question. I like to eat, it is my favorite activity so when someone asks me If I want to participate in that activity or, do it. It naturally becomes my favorite question. When I think of an ideal person, apart from all basic moral characteristics the person should be a phenomenal cook. If you ever meet me, ask me what I like eat and I will like you.

16) Are we alone?

a. The questions “are we alone?” Is one referred to by philosophers and scientists alike? Scientists question the existence of extra-terrestrial creature while the philosophers and supposed doctors of cosmopolitan magazine consider the fact that is we alone inside? In either case I think that we are not alone. I for one believe in the existence of aliens and I think that the government of USA is hiding all evidence and clues of their existence. Form mysterious locations such as area 51 and other odd factors that are continually portrayed on television, I believe in the existence of aliens. For those who believe in god, we should ask the question, if god created our world in seven days, and if our world has existed for over a billion years then god must be pretty damn bored. I quite sure he created at least one or two more worlds like ours with more time and devotion. Aliens do exist whether we like it or not, whether they are going to attack is a different question. But species outside earth do exist.

b. Now concerning the cosmo philosophers, we are only alone inside if we choose to be. If we want to be alone we can, but if we want to be social, if we want to talk others it’s our choice. Our happiness, our actions are in our own hands. So if we choose to complete ourselves with someone else it’s our choice so either way we aren’t alone in this world. I think there is at least one compatible person for everyone, weather we choose to look for that person or not is completely up to us. We are not alone in this world, there are eight billion others? Neither are we the only ones out there in space and who knows how many aliens are out there.

17) Find x.

a. X- Found it.

Just kidding, to find X we must first ask ourselves what x is? Is it an alphabet, is it the number ten or is it treasure on a treasure map. It could also be some kind of action, a mystery. Can x be magic? Or is it something else? Finding x depends on what x which is a variable factor. In algebra 2+x=3, x is 1. To find treasure on an island, on the spot marked x I first need a ship. X is also the Roman numeral ten; it represents the grade ten in the Indian school system and the tenth point in our English essay outline. X can also be magic, something that Harry Houdini would do to hokus - pokus into thin air. X could also be a secret, one as innocent as a teenage crush or as deadly as one of the end of the world as seen in the movie 2012. X is a great many things we wonder about every day, the hairs on my head, the age of that model, or what you plan to do with the rest of your life. The point is that x is a mystery and the question is whether you want to make the effort to solve it or let it be. Personally I have found equilibrium in life so I wouldn’t question things right now, in the future maybe. Who knows, it’s another X. As the great master schifu said in the movie Kung Fu Panda “yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift, that’s why it’s called present.” So all readers I recommend that you live in the present and not worry about the many things that are X.

18) Don’t write about reverse psychology.

a. I don’t like this question. I think that this question is impossible to answer because when you actually think about it it’s an infinite loop. When it says don’t write about reverse psychology, you can either take it literally or then write about reverse psychology and then use reverse psychology again to not write about it. Guess what then you are back at square one. So in order to answer this question I will take the question literally and write about something completely off topic.

b. Getting rid of bad teachers is one of the most effective educational reforms that we could enact in the modern school system. Through standardised testing, observation sessions and teacher evaluations, schools have to start weeding out incompetent teachers to ensure a better quality of Education, even if it means violating a teacher’s tenure. It is extremely important to get rid of incompetent teachers as they can often affect the overall education and futures of many students. Some people may argue that “why go through the extensive trouble of identifying and firing bad teacher, can’t you simply leave this job to the principle?” Favouritism can take place in the school system quite easily; personal friendships with certain teachers can easily influence the job security of those teachers. After all its human nature to protect ones friends. Observations or peer review is an excellent way to identify and terminate bad teachers. Peer review is a system where staffs from the same school or other school sit inside classes on random days to judge the teacher. Ordinarily the topics being judged range from lesson planning to classroom management. This technique is more successful when strangers sit in the classroom to judge the teacher than fellow staff members of the same school, teacher evaluations tend to be more accurate with teacher of other schools judging the class room. It is extremely important to get rid of bad teachers from our school system.

19) What do you think people who know you would be surprised to learn about you? Limit your response to one page.

a. I think that what most people who know me would be most surprised to know about me is that I am actually a very short tempered person. Over the years I have learned to control my temper to a great extent and now I rarely ever show my violent side to anyone. No one except me knows my capacity to hurt someone; I control myself a lot mostly to fit in. When people watch me play the game Grand Theft Auto they are often disgusted by the things that I do while playing the game. The innovative ways I think of to kill more and more people at one time. I know it is a scary thought to have the instincts of a physco killer, sometimes it scares me too. But luckily I can easily control my violent bursts of anger now; when I was smaller I would often get into fights with other kids. It was not uncommon for me to come home bruised after talking back to the older boys after they tried to bully me. Now that I have a set of friends whom I love very much, I think I have learned to subside my anger. Most people, people that I have met in the past five years will be extremely surprised to know how angry and violent I can be. The thing that worries me is what if all the subsided, concentrated and pushed down anger all comes out one day. I can’t even imagine what I would do. Till that day comes I can only control my emotions like I have been doing for so many years, honestly I hate angry people and I can’t bear the thought of seeing myself as one.

20) What is your favourite word, and why? (University of Virginia)

a. Not my favourite but one of my favourite words is the F bomb. The first reason being the word has in some ways stuck to its roots. The legendary root of the word in a summary is, in ancient England a person could not have sex unless you had consent of the King (unless you were in the Royal Family). When anyone wanted to have a baby, they got consent of the King; the King gave them a placard that they hung on their door while they were having sex. The placard had F.*.*.*. (Fornication under Consent of the King) on it. In some ways apart from the curse that it is today it still retains some of its meanings in the sexual content. But the f word is one of the few words that work almost anywhere you put it in the sentence, it can mean a great variety of things, it can be used as a noun, an adjective, a verb and in many other parts of a sentence. It can humour, anger and seduce. It can bring detention, or use of the word can make a third grader popular in his class. Uttering the F word can make some one look dirty, or it can make them look aggressive. Simply the way they say it can tell us for how long they have been using the word. If they use it as if it’s a normal word, in their common speech they were that popular third grader. If they rarely utter it, or only say it when they are angry means they started using the f word once they became more mature. Is there any other word in the dictionary as complicated and yet as simple as the F word. Why am I hesitating to write this word, why is this simple and yet so complex word considered dirty in society. Let me remind you, it’s not my favourite word but one of.

21) Do you believe that your academic record accurately reflects your abilities?

a. My academic record in no way reflects my abilities. My academic records such as my GPA and my SAT score only show who well I can do in classes. That is a minute fraction of life. What about a person’s social skills? Their skills in sports? Their oratory skills? And the many other aspects of life. I can admit that I am not a good student. I don’t get straight A’s I barely manage B’s which makes me look incompetent and limit my options for collage. Where in my academic record does it show that I can thrash all my friends in call of duty, where in my academic record it shows that I am made all Nepal counter strike source team? There is no sign of my football skills in my academic records; nowhere does it show that I can juggle the ball with over hundred touches. Nowhere does it mention my full court goals in the gym. In my academic records my good nature, my kindness, my compassion are I nowhere to be seen. My ability to talk to people, to make new friends is nowhere to be seen in my academic records. Records reflecting what we did in school, how much useless information we uselessly memorized are the only things that are shown in academic records. Our hard work, effort and diligence are never accurately noted in our academic records. Is my cleanliness shown in my academic record, if I can even keep my own room clean? No. academic records are very inaccurate ways of judging people for collage. They only give a very subjective view of the person. Academic records can never accurately depict a person for who they actually are.

22) If money and family obligations left you entirely free, how and where would you spend the summer before college?

a. If money and family obligations left me entirely free, I would spend the summer before college in Europe. After watching the movie euro trip, my friends and I had been planning a trip after graduating from school to Europe. One where we can be completely free of trouble and free of worries, free of the tensions of high school. We decided that we would start of in London spend five days there, go around have a good time, then we would make a little spin thing that is often found in board games and let fate decide where to go next. We would simply spin the arrow and where ever the arrow pointed to is where our next destination would be. Of course crossing off each location as we moved on. Though these trips seem picture prefect in my mind inside I know they are just an innocent fantasy. But If I had the resources to make this trip come true going to Europe with my friends would be the ultimate way to celebrate freedom from school. We decided we would not fly anywhere, rather take the train to all the places that we go instead. That way we at least get to soak in the panoramic views. The tip would obviously involve alcohol being consumed more than water, or so I imagine. This trip would prepare us for collage and help is let go of school. It would be the perfect transition from one stage of my life to another. If only, this dream would come true, I would remember Europe for the rest of my life. It would be the last time to for sure meet my school friends and say proper good buy’s as we head of collage, after all you never know which way life will take you.

23) Jogging has become extremely popular. Explain why you jog or why you don't.

a. I like to run, for me jogging isn’t as much a workout as it is a hobby. Living in a secluded mountain top called Mussoorie, I don’t have to deal with pollution. I like running cross-country, after all am a silver medalist. I like to listen to music while jogging, red hot chilli peppers, in particular. I like their music and for some reason it motivates me run faster. Plus while jogging, you can get your mind off things or you can think about things. I can concentrate on my music, I can concentrate on nature, and I can think about life, I can do a great many things while getting a good workout. Unlike most conventional runners and joggers I jog after school in the evenings rather than the mornings. While jogging I think about the day, I can think about life, I can think about the future. For me jogging is more of thinking activity more than anything. Feeling the breeze against my hair and my face, finding the rhythm in my steps or listening to my own heart drum its beat, Jogging can relax me. I jog all year round, always timing myself striving to better my lap timing. Jogging even has some weird effects; it actually helps me write better essays. Apart from helping me think, I discovered that I get my best ideas while jogging. I’m sure there’s a scientific reason behind it too, but am sure jogging helps clear up the mind. Jogging helps me train for the cress country, it gives me speed, stamina and a little more agility, It clears up the mind, gives a fantastic opportunity to listen to music and catch up to the latest beats, it helps write essays, it helps me win cross country and is all in all an excellent workout.

24) Describe the perfect home.

a. Let me start with stating that I love luxury. I would want a home nothing father from a five star hotel. I would want two swimming pools, one out door and one indoor heated. I want a Ferrari, a Lamborghini and an Aston Martin parked in my garage along with all the other wonders of automotive engineering that come out of Italy. I would want a spa, sauna, steam and a gym all inside my house, also a futsal arena to play whenever I want to, also a basketball court. I would want a Jacuzzi in every other bathroom. I would also want a gaming centre in my house featuring an x-box, a Wii and a PlayStation 3, as well as vintage arcade games including pinball. I also want a go carting track in my house so I can go-kart, all the time. My room would be the best, a double king size bed. A television the size of a wall. I would want a mattress designed specifically for by body. I wouldn’t want to work at home to maintain my house so; I would need the adequate number of servants. I would also want a trampoline room in my house, because that’s extremely cool. I forgot to include the pool table; I would surely include a pool table in my house. The sound system with the TV would be the best in the world. I wouldn’t mind a movie theatre in my house so I never have to wait in line to buy tickets again. I would also want the best chefs of five different cuisines to serve me. I wouldn’t mind a dirt bike track, but not having it would also do. The most important thing is that I should be able to call the place home. Not a house but home.

25) How does advertising affect behaviour?

a. Today’s modern era is a world of advertisement. In every walk of life, there is huge competition. It has made advertisement the more and more important. The louder an advertisement is the more noticeable it will be. In my view, advertisement has great impact on people’s behaviour. In every walk of life, we can find advertisement. Radio, television, newspaper, mobile even when one is reading electronic mail, they can find advertisement in their mail box. Advertisement creates needs. It can be possible that without seeing advertisement, I do not have that need but after seeing or hearing, I get urge to purchase that particular thing. For example, I have a mobile, It is working properly but after seeing advertisement of another mobile with more, better features, I want the newer cell phone now. Advertisements are the best way to create needs among consumers. Advertisers design advertisement according to the characteristics of society. They try to influence consumer behaviour according to their emotions. That’s why they make different advertisement for different age groups or different communities. For example, a children’s clothing brand advertisement tries to influence kid’s behaviour how to wear clothes or which colour is better to wear. Advertisement points us towards materialism. We want new things all the time which motivates us to earn more money. We do not have time for each other. I like to do those things from which I can earn more money instead of sitting with friends or family members. To get a luxurious life, I can be motivated to do wrong things. Advertisement depends on a person, how he earns money. It tries to influence human behaviour. Again, it depends on our maturity that and independent ways to perceive advertisements.

26) What advice does the teenage-you have for your future 35-year-old self?

a. As I sit here writing this blog, I think about what life will be like twenty two years from now. By then my parents will probably be old and grey and my grandparents would probably be dead. I think would be over occupied with work and focusing on earning money to pay for a car rather than saving pocket money to order from Kalsangs. I think I would put work before friends, before family, before the things that are actually important in life. I don’t think I would ever go to the gym, I would watch my waist become bigger but simply put off working out to another day. I think that a 35 year old me would be quite similar to my dad right now. As a realistic teenager I know I wont be the rock star I always imagined myself to be when older, but I still want to lead a social, happy and complete life. So as a teenager, I want to give Varun of the future the advice that never forget to have fun, never forget how to laugh, never forget any of your school friends. No matter what. I want to tell my future self to work hard and make lots of money but always put meeting friends and spending time with family before attending meetings at work. I want to tell myself of the future to never stop playing sports, to always keep up the slim and trim body that I maintain rite now. I always want to be fit and enjoy life to fullest. I would want to tell myself of the future not to become a boring person, who works a seventy hour week, and has no time for anything else. I want to go on vacations as much as possible. So the main advice that teen age Varun gives to Varun of the future is “Enjoy life and take it easy.”

27) What I think about when I'm not listening.

a. In school I have a big problem in classes, not pay attention, not listening to my teachers being physically present in class but mentally, being miles away. Many times when I realize I didn’t do an assignment because I didn’t hear the teacher assignment it in class, I often wonder what exactly I was thinking about at that particular time. Much like a dream I have no memory of what I was thinking about. Then another day in my chemistry class I was day dreaming once again, lost in a vortex of unnecessary and useless thoughts. I realized the things I think about are always about the future. Sometimes I think about what will be served for lunch, and other times I think about random things like becoming a helicopter pilot when I grow up. I have no idea where my thoughts wander off to when I’m not listening, and indulging in my own, little-big word inside my mind. I often get lost in my imagination, I think about the things I would buy if I were a billionaire and wonder the struggle I would have to face if I was poor. From thinking about the life of an astronaut to that of a house husband, when am not listening to someone I simply get lost in a world of role play and crazy imagination. Sometimes I wander off to another planet or world when I’m not paying attention. Dreaming, getting lost, finding that safe, fun and carefree state of mind, in my imagination. When others are talking about important or other things that give me tension my mind automatically gets lost in a safe mode where it does not know what it is thinking about, where it does not remember, where it does not care. I honestly don’t know what I think about when im not listening.

28) What makes your mom or dad special

a. I think the reason my mom and dad are special, or any mom’s and dad’s for that matter the fact that they can tolerate their children and give them unconditional love no matter how big of an ass the child is. I give my parents a lot of trouble and I know it and I can admit it. When I was five years old, I took my dad’s fifteen thousand dollar Rolex and threw it in the toilet pot, if it were me I’d kill my child, but my dad simply pushed his extreme irritation down, and simply said, “don’t touch any of my watches, till you are thirteen.” It may sound a little rude but were talking about a fifteen thousand dollar Rolex. My dad, a self-made with no collage education, has always given me anything that I have wanted. He sent me to one of the best schools in India, and he has fulfilled all my needs and wants instantly. It is what makes my dad special. My mom is the best mom in the world, she is caring, loving and an amazing cook. My mother has an unlimited span of patience, she can cook, teach math, science and manage the house all at the same time. She gave birth to two extremely high maintenance children, and well all I can say is she keeps up. I still remember when I was in the first grade and I was supposed to read a corny poem in front of a large crowd, I was dead nervous and I froze on stage. A man called out “get on with it already!”, those words were like nine knives piercing my heart all at the same time but just them my mother stood up and shouted across the hall “SHUT UP! That’s my son you are talking about, c’mon Varun”, though at the time it was embarrassing, it made me spit that poem out. My mom’s bravery, and love and my dad’s forgiveness and patience is what make my parents special.

29) A place you try to avoid

a. A place I try to avoid, I sit here in front of the blinking line on my computer screen waiting for me to type something. I’m hungry but too lazy and cold to get out of my seat to get food. No one is there to help. I turn on the television in attempt to ignore my growling hunger. Nothing is on television, well they are telecasting sex and the city on warner bros., it’s a movie I have never seen but intentionally avoided my entire life. I decide to avoid it once again. I give up, hunger and cold takes over. I turn on warner bros, and begin watching what no man should ever watch. As I felt part of my masculinity stripped away, hunger ache my stomach and a blank screen straining me in the face waiting for a response. I figured it out. I found the place was trying to avoid, I was, I am in it.

30)If you knew you wouldn't fail, what would you do?

a. If I knew that I wouldn’t fail, a feeling so hard, so rare to come by I would leave home after collage. I would never attend the bogus university that I am currently writing about because; I never wanted to go to college in the first place. It is a hindrance in my plan to open a chain of amazing restaurants, I know that going to college will help me achieve that goal but not in my life. For me attending college and choosing my courses is more complicated then it may seem. My father will never let me do hotel management and then an MBA to help me achieve my dream. All he wants me to do is take over his company, a boring old hardware business rather than pursue my own dreams. If could do anything knowing I wouldn’t fail, I would definitely run away from home and open my own restaurant. Of course its much harder and takes much more courage than it may seem. But if I absolutely knew that there was no chance of failing I would go and open a restaurant. Even typing this I feel like I am betraying my parents, but can’t even imagine the pleasure of tell my dad, “hey dad guess what? I didn’t fail in life.” Maybe if I insist and maybe if I fight with my parents, they will let me do what I want. I don’t know, but if knew I wouldn’t fail I would run away from home and open a restaurant. It would even sound cool in a magazine article. “Varun Kedia, pioneer of the Kedia foods corp. ran away from home and took a risk to start his first restaurant.” Though it is an extremely rare situation, if I knew I wouldn’t fail I would take a risk and run away.

  1. comment for post 12 - you are really going to spoil your eyes watching tv show after tv show, but yea, if you want to spend your day like that go ahead, and since you're already doing so, don't forget to order crepe with nutella and ice-cream from fire 'n' ice. It's sososososossso good! :D

  2. comment for post 19 - a scary prasanna - can't imagine that at all! This was surprising (and kinda scary too) to read. They say people that get angry often are not as scary as those that never get angry when they're angry ... (did that make sense?)

  3. comment on post 1: Good job! I feel that reducing fossil fuels will eradicate or at least lessen the effect of global warming. I like how you use holland as an example for other countries to look upto. However, you have to remember that the point of this post is so that the college can get to know you better. What I think is that you should have concentrated more on reflecting on the topic and revealing your personality.
